At the moment the RTX 2070 is only compatible with 10th generation Intel Coffee Lake processors. AMD Ryzen 3 2200G
The Ryzen 3 2200G is a budget CPU that can be overclocked to match or beat the i5 9400F in many tasks. In addition to that, it comes with a 4-core/4-thread architecture and 8 Vega GPU cores which you can unlock for even more performance. If you’re on a limited budget, this might be your best bet! The G4920 is an older Coffee Lake CPU that still has 4 physical cores and only costs $100. This makes it a great choice if you’re looking for raw performance while not spending much money. With this processor, you’re limited to the iGPU so you’ll have to buy additional hardware to unlock RTX 2070’s capabilities.
AMD Ryzen 5 2400G
The AMD Ryzen 5 2400G comes with four physical cores, 8 Vega GPU cores and 4 threads. You’ll be able to unlock the CPU’s full potential too which means you’ll get more performance than Nvidia’s iGPU can deliver. Combined with an RTX 2070 it will perform way better than anything else in the market.
Intel I7 9700K
If you want the absolute highest performance, then the Intel Core i7 9700K is your best bet. It performs as well as AMD’s latest Ryzen CPUs and comes with 8 cores/8 threads which will make it a great choice for very powerful computers! The downside to this CPU is its high price, it currently costs around $400.
Intel I7 8700K
One step down from the 9700K is Intel’s i7 8700K which comes with 6 cores and 12 threads. It will be able to outperform all AMD CPUs in games and most other tasks on the market today! For the same price as the Ryzen 5 2400G, you can get this CPU which will have better overall performance.
Intel I5 8600K
The i5 8600K has 6 cores and 6 threads, making it ideal for builds that are on a tight budget. Although the price is slightly lower than the i7 8700K, you should expect around 20% less performance. Still, this CPU is a great value for money and will perform well in games.
AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
The Ryzen 5 2600X comes with 6 cores/12 threads and has an XFR function that overclocks the processor to 4GHz without any extra cost. This makes it a premium choice if you’re looking to buy AMD’s fastest CPU at the moment. Combined with RTX 2070, the performance should be much better than what you can get from Intel’s i5 8600K! For professional workstations where the price isn’t an issue, we recommend getting the best possible parts – so if you have some extra cash go for either of these CPUs instead!
Intel I7 9700Kor I5 9400F?
The Intel Core i7 9700Kor the Intel Core i5 9400F are both great CPUs for RTX 2070 builds. They have high performance and can be overclocked so they will outperform all AMD processors on the market. If you’re looking to save some money, then go for an older CPU that might not perform as well but surely costs less! The Ryzen 3 2200G is a good example of this.
AMD has always been behind Intel when it comes to performance per dollar spent but according to our records, the release of Zen+ CPUs put them back in competition with Intel’s Coffee Lake architecture. Nowadays AMD CPUs also offer more cores compared to similarly priced Intel parts which makes them ideal if you’re looking to do CPU intensive work such as streaming, recording and rendering.
At the moment there is no clear winner between Intel and AMD CPUs on the market when it comes to RTX 2070 builds so you have to choose based on your personal preferences! If you’re worried about future upgradability, go with a 9700K because it’s an Intel platform while AMD’s CPUs are built on the AM4 socket.
