Both Grammarly and ProwritingAid are online grammar checkers with free versions. Grammarly has more advanced features in the premium version while Prowritingaid provides basic services for both free and paid users.

If you prefer an offline application, Microsoft Word plug-in, multiple accounts per user, context correction, etc., then Grammarly is your best choice. If you prefer a simple interface that doesn’t have ads, then go for Prowritingaid. To sum up, Grammarly is slightly better than Prowritingaid but if you only need a simple tool to check writing mistakes, Prowritingaid will meet all your needs.

Interface & Design

Grammarly has a very simple interface which is one of its best features. It seeks to save your time by checking your writing quickly and accurately so the interface should be as clean as possible. In this regard, Grammarly differs from Prowritingaid in two aspects: design and plug-in. Compared with Prowritingaid, there are no ads on the interface of Grammarly which means that you can focus on editing your writing without any distractions; Also it provides a desktop application for Windows and Mac which allows users to check their documents offline and then upload them online later if they find errors.

Both Grammarly and Prowritingaid have the option to check your writing for errors in context. These online grammar checkers perform this service by using advanced algorithms that detect grammatical mistakes as well as contextual errors such as wordiness, redundancy, subject-verb agreement, etc. Even though both tools include a correction feature, Prowritingaid doesn’t reveal the correct sentence. It only underlines the mistakes and you need to click on them to see what’s wrong with your writing.

Grammarly has a wider range of helpful features: punctuation checker, plagiarism detector, dictionary, verb conjugator, etc., which is why it seems better to use. Grammarly vs ProwritingAid: Conclusion

ProwritingAid is easier and faster to use because you don’t need registration or downloading anything on your computer; You can just open the website in your browser, write your text, and check for errors. On the other hand, Grammarly has a more detailed and accurate checking result thanks to the dictionary, verb conjugator, etc. You should choose Grammarly if you need advanced features such as the Microsoft Word plugin, multiple accounts per user, community function, etc.

Both Grammarly and ProwritingAid offer a free version for users to check their writing for errors. However, the free version of Grammarly has several limitations: limited checking pages, no downloading option, etc. In this sense, Prowritingaid seems better because you only need to sign up with your email and then you have access to all features.

If you need an advanced version, Grammarly provides a premium option (monthly subscription) and a business version (annual subscription). The monthly price of the premium account is $29.95 while the annual one is $139.95. On the other hand, Prowritingaid provides a reliable free version.

Plagiarism detection

You can use both Grammarly and ProwritingAid to check your writing for plagiarism. However, Grammarly detects a wider variety of sources in a shorter time. In this regard, you should choose Grammarly because it’s more accurate in detecting plagiarism and provides useful statistics about the percentage of copied/original text, etc.

ProwritingAid doesn’t have any FAQ or Help Center while Grammarly has both. The FAQ section on the Grammarly website is wide and useful while we couldn’t find a Help Center for ProwritingAid.

Community feature

You can use the community function only on Grammarly. Thanks to this feature, you can connect with other users and follow their activities such as reading the correction comments they make when checking your text or making your own corrections on someone else’s writing. This way, you can get feedback from experienced people in your niche about the mistakes they find in your writing; Also, they will see your corrections and you will get feedback from them.

ProwritingAid doesn’t have this function which is why it seems better to choose Grammarly if you are looking for an option to connect with other users and build a community around your blog or writing projects.

Grammarly is more recommended than ProwritingAid. You should choose Grammarly if you need advanced features such as the Microsoft Word plugin, multiple accounts per user, community function, etc., and in case you want to check your writing for plagiarism and avoid copyright infringement. On the other hand, Prowritingaid is the best option in case you need to check your writing for errors only.
