WLED vs LED – What Is The Difference?

LED and WLED is both LED technologies used in many applications including TVs, smartphones, laptops, monitors and so much more. But what is the difference between the two? It can be a little confusing as they sound similar and because of this people often overlook the important differences between WLED vs LED. WLED In a Nutshell

WLED technology stands for White LED which as you might have guessed already uses an array of White LEDs as their main light source. However, in order to get the White color that you see on the screen, WLEDs are paired together with red and blue LEDs (RGB) which when combined give off a brilliant white light. This is how the traditional LCD screens operate by combining three colors; Red, Blue, and Green to make up all other colors including most importantly white.

The benefits of WLED are that they are more efficient than an LED screen without them, but there is still some debate on whether or not this difference in efficiency is worth the added cost of these additional White LEDs. This has to lead to many manufactures swapping out their LED panels with WLED panels (e.g. backlit panels) to cut costs and increase their margins. Also, the way WLEDs work is a little different than traditional LEDs. They do not have a designated positive and negative electrode which makes them more efficient but also increases the chance of burn-in on your screen over long periods of time as there are no electrodes refreshing the pixels from image retention.

WLEDs are also becoming more common in TVs as manufacturers are trying to reduce the amount of power they use where WLED is a very efficient technology that can achieve this goal without sacrificing too much on picture quality.

LED technology stands for Light Emitting Diode which is essentially what it sounds like. The LED screen works by having the light source (the LEDs) placed behind the actual display panel so they shine through to create an image. This is how traditional LED TVs operate, with each pixel containing Red, Green, and Blue LEDs to create the color white.

LED Pros And Cons

The main benefit of an LED screen is that there are no separate light sources needed as all pixels contain their own individual Red, Blue, and Green lights giving you a more uniform look. This also means that there is less chance of any light or image retention but it’s not completely eliminated. There are also several other pros to using an LED screen which include being more efficient with power usage, producing deeper blacks, and being able to achieve higher resolutions compared to WLEDs. The main con is that they are still slightly more expensive than an equivalent-sized WLED display.


As you can see, LEDs vs WLED has many similarities but there are some small differences that make them unique technologies. As the technology evolves, we will begin to see more and more WLED applications replacing LED displays in our homes and offices.
