10 Major Table Tennis Tournaments List Which You Can’t Skip


Table Tennis, the most extensively growing indoor game which is gaining its popularity worldwide.  Its association is spread over more than 226 countries and are registered under ITTF. The ever-increasing opportunities are opening doors for the Table tennis enthusiast.

Currently, Ma Long, a Chinese table tennis player, has championed World rankings as well as the Olympics. Similarly, Ding Ning is also a player from China who is heading the women’s top table tennis list.

Now, let us have a glance at the Top Table Tennis Tournaments.

World Table Tennis Championship

The World Table Tennis Championship has been continuing since 1926, happening every year, generally in April- May of the year. Under this, five individual events take place including-

  • Men’s doubles
  • Women’s doubles
  • Mixed doubles
  • Men’s singles
  • Women’s singles

The World Table Tennis Championship is organized by the International Table Tennis Federation. (ITTF). The ITTF held individual and team events separately for the first time in 1999 and 2000, respectively. Starting in 2003, individual and team events were organized separately again, and each continued to be played independently every other year.

As per the latest records, China has been topping the charts with a total of 407 medals followed by Hungary and Japan with 202 and 157 medals respectively in the World Table Tennis Championship. Here is an interesting fact, Hungary was a dominant team for 12 years in the championship, followed by Japan in the initial years. However, from 1960 onwards, China came to top the list.

Table Tennis World Cup

The Table Tennis World Cup has been held every year since 1980. Then only men’s singles were played and later on, in 1996, women’s singles were inaugurated. Likewise, team competitions were played from 1990. These competitions are also approved and performed under ITTF.

However, the playing system is acknowledged by the Executive Committee and endorsement by the Competition Department.

Olympic Games

The Olympics are the leading international sporting events which are basically divided into the Summer and Winter Olympics. Athletes from all over the globe participate in a whole range of sports. Olympic games consist of 30+ sports and 400+ events, ranging from Fencing to Ski Jumping.

The most recent Table Tennis event was held in 2018 in the Summer Youth Olympics which took place from 7 to 15 October in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Under this, three events took place in total, where 1st event was men’s singles, and 2nd was women’s singles and the last for the mixed doubles.

Asian Table Tennis Championships

The Asian Table Tennis Championship is esteemed as the Continental Championship by the International Table Tennis Federation, (ITTF) as the name itself tells “Asian.” The Table Tennis Federation of Asia (TTFA) conducted the tournament from 1952 to 1972.

Lately, the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) began its Asian Championships as a result of the separation between national table tennis associations in Asia.

Asian Games

Table Tennis has been played in Asian Games since 1958. The events that it includes are Men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. China yet again has topped the list followed by Japan. They have a membership with 44 Asian nations. Well, this spectacular event that took place so far in Asian table tennis tournaments were Open de Nice Côte d’Azur, 2016, Ocean City Open,1977.

Commonwealth Games

A total of nine events take place in the Table Tennis Commonwealth Games. Three events for women and men each and a mixed doubles match. Also, two para-sport matches take place. A total of 35 participating countries in Table Tennis take part in 160 athletes.

Well, recently India hosted the Table Tennis Commonwealth Championship from 17th-26th July 2019.  Harmeet Desai (Men Singles) and Ayhika Mukherjee (Women Singles) from India are the winners who bagged gold medals for their countries.

IITF world tour

ITTF world tour, also known as the ITTF Pro Tour before 2011, is an annual chain of tournaments that was originally introduced by the ITTF in the year 1996.

Moreover, the whole tour is conducted under a total of seven events: Women’s and Men’s Singles, Mixed doubles, Men’s, Women’s and under 21 Women’s and Men’s singles. However, the ITTF World Tour has its point system in which the highest scorers in 7 categories will be invited ti finale.

Pan American Table Tennis Championship

This is the special tournament is organized for countries of the Americas. Well, the debut match was first played in the year 2017, and the Championship is sponsored by Latin  American Table Tennis Union and the Northern American Table Tennis Union. This tournament includes various inter-committee competitions, Men’s Single and Double’s, Women’s Single and Double’s, and mixed doubles.

World Junior Table Tennis Championships

This is an annual table tennis tournament organized for the player under 18. This championship has been held by International Table Tennis Federation since the year 2003.

Its last tournament was held in Bendigo, Australia in the year 2018. Wherein, it includes Men’s Single and Double’s, Women’s Single and Double’s individually.

NCAA Table Tennis Championship

It is the National Collegiate Athletic Association Table Tennis tournament, which is held between February – March every year according to the NCAA season. The first NCAA tournament was held in 1883.

Basically, it is a US-based tournament championship. A total of 63 teams participated in this championship. Additionally, they have various categories of competitions, which includes intercollegiate competitions, Junior’s, Men’s, Women’s Singles, and Doubles.
